Salford 10k – ‘Michael Page’ NWFPAC 2019 Championship – Race #3

I looked forward to this race when the NWFPAC calendar was sent out, a fast 10k in the picturesque Irwell Valley. It is typically a PB course with minimal undulation.

Waking up in the Good Friday heatwave put an end to any dreams of a PB for most of the runners, though there were still 152 under 40 minutes.

I’ve been used to running with long sleeves and gloves recently on my 6am excursions so I was completely unprepared for the heat. It was 16° at 10am and whilst the ‘lie in’ was great for some, I’d have much preferred an 8am start!

The route itself is a 5k loop with only about 30 ft of elevation and takes in the sights of Salford; HMP Forest Bank, Agecroft Cemetery and the River Irwell.

First over the line was Norman Shreeve in 31:03, with GB athlete Bronwen Owen being the first female finisher in 34:35.

Byron’s impressive run of form brought him home in 35:32, 20 points and good enough for 61st (5th M45).

Great running throughout the field, with John and Alan only 8 seconds apart, and Charlie teaching his son a lesson and not letting him win!

Even my recent warm weather training down under wasn’t enough to get me a new PB, coming home in 45:50, probably enough to justify an Easter Egg though!

Anyway, enough moaning about the weather! Great long bank holiday weekend for most of us to enjoy!
