My love of running began in October 2011 when I decided to run a marathon to tick it off my bucket list - I was only 38 at the time, but thought it was easier to do a marathon sooner rather than later!  

 

Six months later I completed the Greater Manchester Marathon and, finding myself fitter than I'd been for about 20 years, I decided that I didn't want to lose this new fitness.  In addition, having done that first marathon in 4:12, I quite wanted to get under the four hour mark and, with that, the seed was sown and I've run ever since.

I co-founded NWFPAC at the start of 2014 to enable those in the finance professional community who ran a bit to network with each other, but also to enter races together and have a bit of friendly competition.  This has grown into a group of over 180 members who partake as little or as much as they want to and has given me the opportunity to meet lots of great people and run new races.

​

In my day job, I work at Azets in their Corporate Finance team, which advises company owners on corporate transactions, helping to grow the business before eventually selling the company.  These transactions include:

  • debt and equity fundraising, including re-banking and restructuring;

  • business acquisitions, including management buy-outs and buy-ins; and

  • business sales, including partial sales (also known as ‘cash-outs’).

I first became aware of NWFPAC when I met Dave for a coffee to talk about business but we soon moved on to our mutual love of running. I thought I could help increase membership by tapping up some of the many accountants I meet in my job who have a vague interest in running and directing them to the group.

 

From an early age I was probably always destined to be a runner – dad ran for Wales in the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games, mum captained her uni team and my grandad was President of Sale Harriers for over 40 years! Earlier in life I captained the university cross country team and represented Greater Manchester in track and cross country, though since moving into the workplace my waistline and season’s bests have both headed in the wrong direction! Being involved in NWFPAC has reinvigorated my running and it’s great to be involved in a club like this – hopefully it can have the same impact on you!

 

When I’m not running, I run the Michael Page Finance North West team. We have a team of 20 specialists recruiting qualified accountants for practices, advisors, investors, not for profit organisations and businesses. A number of those including Charlotte Haworth, Alex Mackenzie and Rachael Homans are also keenly involved in NWFPAC.
